Crossing the Sea of Cortez

It took a little over 50 hours to sail across the Sea from Mazatlán to Bahía de los Muertos. The sea state was calm and the winds light and variable. It was a relatively uneventful passage, which is good! The Baja Penninsula welcomed us with stunning sunsets and beautiful desert landscapes. Very different than mainland Mexico!

Jeremyah at the helm during the passage.
We stay clipped into the boat during night watches and when the weather conditions become ‘sporty’.
A fiery sunset on the second night of our passage. We were a little over halfway across the Sea of Cortez at this point.
Land Ho!! We began to see frigate birds and a glimpse of land in the distance. Always a moment to celebrate!
We arrived in Bahía de los Muertos late morning on 4/13. We were stunned by the crystal clear turquoise waters and white sand beaches. This area is known for its world class sport fishing and diving.
After recuperating from our long passage, we took a stroll on the beach at Bahía de los Muertos.

Second sunset at Bahía de los Muertos
We arrived on Isla Espiritu Santo, Playa Bonanza late  morning from Muertos. This was a wonderful anchorage. We were stunned by the incredible colors of the water and sand.

A good find while beachcombing on Espiritu Santo Island.

The desert islands of the Sea of Cortez are truly spectacular with their diverse species of cactus, songbirds and sea life.
Dinghy ride to the snorkel spot at Playa Bonanza.
And then the oligarchs showed up. They set up a discotech on the beach at Espiritu Santo and blasted music all night and into the morning 😦
We arrived in La Paz after spending 4 days on Espiritu Santo. La Paz is a large port and one of few places on the Baja where we can stock up on fuel, water and boat supplies. It’s noticeably hotter here. The best time to go out for a walk is at nighttime!

Thanks for sharing some of your adventures! Love that second sunset at Bahía de los Muertos. Such beautiful waters there. Hope you got everything you needed in La Paz…and got to a better anchorage after that.
