Puerto los Gatos

We’ve met some amazing people along the way, both locals and fellow cruisers. One of the highly recommended anchorages was Puerto los Gatos, several nautical miles north of San Evaristo. The area is known for its red rock formations and towering backdrop of the Sierra Gigante mountain range. We arrived to a  rainbow of colors in the rock, sand and sea. The anchorage was remote with only a few sailboats. We stayed her for three days exploring the geology, snorkeling, spearfishing and enjoyed a campfire on the beach with other cruisers. This place was truly magical and unforgettable.

The turquoise waters and pink/red sand and rocks was a beautiful color combination.

Immediately after anchoring, we were greeted by local pangueros (fisherman) with fresh lobstertail for purchase. We grilled it along with the fish we bought in San Evaristo.
Jeremyah speared a fish on the second day!  We ID’d it as a Brassy Sea Chub. The guide said it was a trash fish, but it was delicious and not bony!
This is a weird picture. We put the flashlight in the water at night and attracted thousands of invertebrates (we believe it’s krill). Eventually a bunch of fish rose from the deep and a feeding frenzy began. It was so cool.

Puerto los Gatos really does look like a magical, colorful and food-full! bay. So much life and geological drama! We really appreciate you posting about your journey through the Sea of Cortez. It must feel great to be able to commune with other cruisers and share stories around a fire on the far away beaches.
